- Pop. 406. In Portland T., Frontenac C. on C. Rd. 38, 19 km. NW of Kingston.
- The first settlers arrived in the early 1820s and by the end ofthat century Hartington had two railway stations, one in the village and another named Sigsworth -- after a local family -- a short distance south.
- The community is the seat of the T. of Portland and located in its heart, which factors are believed to have been the origin of its name.
- The place may also have been named in honour of the eighth Duke of Devonshire, Marquess of Hartington, who served as secretary of war in the cabinet of Lord John Russell.
