  • Pop. 5,471. In Kendall T., Cochrane Dist., on the Mattawishkwia R. and Hwy 11,97 km NW of Kapuskasing.
  • The settlement, first known as Grant, started in the early 1900s as a maintenance point on the transcontmental raIlway and the northern terminus of the Algoma Central Railroad from Sault Ste. Marie.
  • In 1911 the name was changed to Hearst to honour Sir William Howard Hearst, premier of Ontario 1914-1919.
