Description From Owner:
- Pop. 418. In Orford T., Kent C., on C. Rds. 19 & 20, 2 km S of Hwy 401, 64 km SW of St. Thomas. Brothers John, James, and Joseph Gosnell from Ireland settled in 1822.
- Relatives followed, and the community became known as the Gosnell Settlement. Around 1850 Anthony Atkinson set up an unofficial post office, to which he brought mail from nearby Duart.
- When the government established a post office in 1865, he became postmaster and named the community Highgate after a suburb of London, England.
