- Pop. 272. In Egremont T., Grey C., on C. Rds. 9 & 106, 76 krn NW of Guelph. Egremont T. was organized in 1850, but Holstein did not become a village until 1855.
- The place was first called Rosemont.
- When the post office opened in 1863, postmaster N. D. McKenzie, a former schoolteacher, chose the name Holstein because Prussia had recently marched successfully against Denmark for control of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein.
