Description From Owner:
  • Pop.215. In Brooke T., Lambton C., on C. Rd. 8, 58 km. SE of Sarnia.
  • In the early 1870s, James Courtright, nephew of the president of Canada Southern Railway, recognized the timber potential of the land through which his uncle's railroad ran.
  • He and his partners, Holmes and Moore, (the bridge contractors on the new railroad), bought a 95-acre (38.4 ha) site which they subdivided into village lots.
  • In 1873 the three men built a stave mill and sawmill, which turned out tens of thousands of board feet oflumber until it closed in 1898.
  • The community that grew up around the mill was named by C. H. Moore after Inwood, a town on the Hudson R. in New York State.
  • Three of the streets commemorate the names of the founding partners. In 1899 a ftre destroyed many businesses and houses. Most were rebuilt.
