Pop. 1,710. Part of the City of Nanticoke, Reg. Mun. of Haldimand Norfolk, on Hwys 3 & 6, 17 km NE of Simcoe.
The community began when the Hamilton and Port Dover Plank Road was being built in the mid-19th century. James Shearman, the fIrst settler, built a log shanty and a blacksmith shop beside the road.
He also kept a supply of liquor available for the construction crews and later opened a tavern. W. C. Shannon was the second settler.
He tended the tollgate on the plank road. Much of Jarvis was destroyed by fire in the mid-l 870s, but by the end of the decade it had been rebuilt.
The post office was established in 1851 and named Jarvis after Lt. -Cot William Jarvis, aide-de-camp of Lt. -Gov. John Graves Simcoe. Several streets in Jarvis are named after his daughters.
