Ontario Tourism Region : Ontario's Highlands
Description From Owner:
- Pop. 224. In Kaladar T., Lennox and Addington Cs., at the junction of Hwys 7 and 41, 47 km. NW of Napanee.
- Hwy 41 contains portions of the Addington Rd. built from 1854-1857 to attract settlers. The community, fIrst known as Scouten, after postmaster Sydney Scouten, took its name from the township, surveyed by Henry Ewing in the early 1820s.
- There are several explanations for the name. One holds that it derives from an Irish place or estate, most likely in County Kildare.
- suggests it is a corruption of 'kill a deer,' as deer were plentiful in pioneer days.
