Pop. 48,014. In the Reg. Mun. of Ottawa-Carleton, 24 km. NW of Ottawa.
The community was created by regional government in 1978 by combining the city of Nepean with parts of the T. of Goulboum.
By a narrow margin, residents chose Kanata over Hazeldean, a place in Goulboum T. Kanata is a First Nations Peoples name for Canada and means 'a collection (or cluster) of huts.'
