- Pop. 9,501. In Dist. of Cochrane on the Kapuskasing R. and Hwy 11, 118 km. W of Cochrane.
- In the early 1900s, when the Transcontinental Railway was being pushed west, the place where the line crossed the Kapuskasing R. was known as MacPherson.
- In 1914 the federal government established an internment camp for enemy prisoners of war. By the following year, there were 1,200 prisoners and 250 troops in the camp and 600 acres (243 ha) had been cleared.
- The camp operated until 1920 when the last prisoner of war was repatriated; the graves of 32 German prisoners may be seen in a small cemetery near the public cemetery.
- . In 1917 the town took its present name from a First Nations Peoples word meaning 'the divided waters,' or 'bend in the river.'
