Pop. 3,272. In Oxford T., Leeds and Grenville Cs., on Kemptville Cr., a tributary of the Rideau R. and C. Rd. 43, 3 km W of Hwy 416, 41 km S of Ottawa. In 1812 Lyman Clothier settled and built a mill.
The community, fIrst known as The Branch, (after the South Branch of the Rideau R.), then became known as Clothier Mills.
In 1828 the settlers wanted a more dignified name and chose Kemptville in honour of Sir James Kemp, lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia in 1820 and governor-general of British North America 1828-1830.
The Hon. G. Howard Ferguson (1870-1946), born here, was Ontario's ninth premier, 1923-1930, and later served as Canadian high commissioner to the UK.
In the early 1930s a 43-km plank road was built to connect Kemptville with steamship traffic landing at Prescott on the St. Lawrence R.
