Pop. 315. In Lee T., Timiskaming Dist., on Hwy 66, 6 km. E of Kirkland Lake.
The community was founded in 1932 by people who wanted to live outside Kirkland Lake. Most were employees of the Murphy and Morris Kirkland mines, which closed in the 1950s, but many found new employment in the Upper Canada Mine and other regional mines.
Kirkland Lake was named by L. V. Rorke of the Department of Mines after his secretary, Miss Winnie Kirkland of Toronto. The origin of the King part of the name is not known.

Well Candy... My Father... Ted Hodgins built that chip stand for Al and Marion Smith and I worked for them in the chip stand along with Lucille Merrick so I just might have served you:)I too loved the hand cut fries and soft ice cream....hopefully others will remember that chip stand as well....

My parents were friends of Al and Marion Smith and we frequented Smity dirve in ( and the grocery store) many times when I was a kid. I still remember the hand cut fries and soft ice cream. Cira 1965
