Ontario Tourism Region : Bruce Peninsula, Southern Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe
Description From Owner:
- Pop. 207. In Tiny T., Simcoe C., on C. Rd. 26, 10 km W of Midland. The place was first known as Ste-Croix because of the many crosses erected here by Father Jean Louis Hennepin, a missionary sent from France to Canada in 1675.
- The second time the place was settled was in the 1830s when disbanded French-Canadian soldiers came to take up grants of land they had been assigned.
- They named the community Lafontaine to honour Sir Louis Hippolyte Lafontaine, joint premier of United Canada 1848-1851, with Robert Baldwin.
- Lafontaine survived well into the 20th century as the only Ontario settlement of any size where English was not spoken, but by the 1940s most residents were bilingual.
