Pop. 850. In Lanark T., Lanark C., on the Clyde R. and C. Rds. 12 & 511, 14 km. NW of Perth.
The first house at what settlers called New Lanark, after the township and a place in Scotland, was built by David Bowers in 1820.
More than 3,000 settlers, many of them unemployed weavers from Scotland and discharged soldiers, were established on recently surveyed townships in this area during 1820 and 1821.
The government set up a depot here to serve as the centre of a military settlement in the newly surveyed surrounding townships.
Most of the settlers of the Lanark area were immigrants from the Scottish Cs. of Lanark and Renfrew. When the post office opened in 1823, the place was called Lanark.
