- Pop. 727. In Charlottenburgh and Lancaster Ts., Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Cs., 1.5 km. N of L. St. Francis (a widening of the S1, Lawrence and Raisin Rs.) on C. Rds. 2, 17 & 34, just N ofHwy 401, 24 km. NE of Cornwall.
- The settlement was founded by United Empire Loyalists in 1787 and fIrst known as New Lancaster, then Kirktown, and fInally Lancaster after George III, one of whose titles was Duke of Lancaster.
- Three major fires in the 1920s destroyed many of the town's historic buildings, but the 1825-vintage Moose Head Inn survived. It was a stagecoach inn and in its early years was also used as a courtroom.
- During renovation of the basement under the courtroom, a keg of deteriorated gunpowder was discovered; it had been placed directly under the judge's chair.
