- Pop. 5,467. In Wallace and Elma Ts., Perth C., on the Middle Maitland R. and Hwy 23 and C. Rd. 86,54 km. NW of Kitchener-Waterloo.
- The first settler was John Binning, who bought land in 1852 from a man named Henry in exchange for a rifle. In 1855 residents held a meeting and decided to name their community Mapleton.
- The same year, William Gibson opened a store nearby and called it Windham. When an application for a post office was approved in 1856, the government rejected both proposed names and called it Listowel after the town of Listowel in County Kerry, Ireland.
- An early storekeeper here was John Livingstone, brother of African explorer and missionary, Dr. David Livingstone.
