Pop. 5,467. In Wallace and Elma Ts., Perth C., on the Middle Maitland R. and Hwy 23 and C. Rd. 86,54 km. NW of Kitchener-Waterloo.
The first settler was John Binning, who bought land in 1852 from a man named Henry in exchange for a rifle. In 1855 residents held a meeting and decided to name their community Mapleton.
The same year, William Gibson opened a store nearby and called it Windham. When an application for a post office was approved in 1856, the government rejected both proposed names and called it Listowel after the town of Listowel in County Kerry, Ireland.
An early storekeeper here was John Livingstone, brother of African explorer and missionary, Dr. David Livingstone.
