Description From Owner:
- Pop. 442. In Assignack T., Manitoulin Dist., on Manitoulin I. at the foot of Manitowaning Bay off Georgian Bay on Hwy 6,51 km S of Little Current.
- The Manitowaning Treaties of 1836 and 1862, between chiefs of the Ojibwa and Ottawa nations and the Government of Canada, were signed here. The treaty of 1836 designated the entire island as a reserve for First Nations Peoples.
- The 1862 treaty opened Manitoulin, exclusive of the eastern peninsula, to general settlement.
- The eastern peninsula remains the Wikwemikong Indian Reserve, believed to be North America's only unceded First Nations Peoples reserve and therefore, in theory at least, not a part of Canada.
- The first Anglican church mission on Manitoulin I. was established in 1838 as an outpost of the Diocese of Toronto.
- Between 1845 and 1849 the small First Nations Peoples congregation, led by Rev. F. A. O'Meara, built St. Paul's Church, the oldest remaining church in the Manitoulin-Algoma area.
- Manitowaning is a First Nations Peoples word for 'home of the great spirit,' in this case the good spirit Gitchie Manitou.
