  • Pop. 2,332. In Papineau T., Nipissing Dist. at the junction of the Mattwa and Ottawa Rs. and Hwys 17 & 533, 62 km. E of North Bay.
  • The First Nations Peoples name means 'meeting of the waters.'
  • In 1837 Mattawa House became an important Hudson's Bay Company post and a centre of the fur trading and lumber busmesses. Today the Otto Holden hydro project is a major employer.
