- Pop. 433. In Ekfrid T., Middlesex C., on C. Rds. 2 & 9, 41 km SW of London. A post office named Ekfried opened in 1832.
- The name was later corrected to Ekfrid, the township's name, taken from Ekfrid, king of Northumbria, a kingdom of ancient Britain.
- In 1857 the name changed to Longwood and in 1882 to Wendigo. In 1887 the current name was adopted after Melbourne, a town in Derbyshire, England, that comes from 'mel' a mill and 'bourne,' stream or brook.
