Ontario Tourism Region : Southwestern
Description From Owner:
- Pop. 723. In Raleigh & Tilbury East Ts., Kent C., and C. Rds. 7 & 8, 20 km. S of Chatham.
- There were scattered farms in the area in the 1820s, but the townsite wasn't settled until 1830 when a Mr. Smith and his five sons and John Powell arrived. In the 1840s Rev. William King founded a settlement of former U.S. slaves.
- The place was first called Smith's Corners, but there was another place by that name in Ontario, so when the post office opened in 1868 it was called Merlin -- either after Merlin in Scotland, or the small hawk, Falco columbarius.
- Merlin does not appear on modem maps of the U.K.
