Description From Owner:

Pop. 723. In Raleigh & Tilbury East Ts., Kent C., and C. Rds. 7 & 8, 20 km. S of Chatham.
There were scattered farms in the area in the 1820s, but the townsite wasn't settled until 1830 when a Mr. Smith and his five sons and John Powell arrived. In the 1840s Rev. William King founded a settlement of former U.S. slaves.
The place was first called Smith's Corners, but there was another place by that name in Ontario, so when the post office opened in 1868 it was called Merlin -- either after Merlin in Scotland, or the small hawk, Falco columbarius.
Merlin does not appear on modem maps of the U.K.
