Description From Owner:
- Pop. 228. In Kenora Dist. on Sand L. (a widening of the Winnipeg R.) and Hwy 596, 51 km. NW of Kenora.
- The community dates from the Wolsley Expedition of 1870 when the place was called Winnipeg River Crossing. A post office was established in 1912 as Minaki, a First Nations Peoples word meaning 'beautiful country.'
- The CNR put the community on the map when it opened a luxury summer lodge in 1914. To provide a nine-hole golf course, the railroad bought a Manitoba farm and hauled 30 rail cars of topsoil to Minaki.
- Minaki Lodge was destroyed by fire in 1925 but by 1927 Scottish stone masons and Swedish loggers had rebuilt it.
- The Ontario government took over the lodge in 1974 and poured $40 million into it before selling it at a tremendous loss to the Radisson Hotel Corp. of Minneapolis.
- Radisson turned the place around and sold it in 1987 to the Four Seasons hotel group. In 2003 the magnifIcent original main lodge was destroyed by fire.
