Pop. 529,160. In Reg. Mun. of Peel, on L. Ontario immediately W. of Toronto.
The land originally belonged to the Mississaugas, and in 1805 four chieftains met with Hon. William Claus, deputy superintendent of lndian Affairs, at Government House at the mouth of the Credit R.
The First Nations Peoples sold the southerly portion of their lands, 70,784 acres (28,667.5 ha), for £1,000. The new township was surveyed the following year, and settlers began moving in.
The first was Philip Cody, who opened an inn in Sydenham, later known as Fonthill and then Dixie.
By 1974 the City ofMississauga had incorporated the communities of Cooksville, Clarkson, Lake View, Erindale, Meadowvale, Churchville, Loroe Park, Dixie, Burnhamthorpe, Malton, Sheridan, Park Royal, Cloverleaf, Applewood, Derry West,
Port Credit, Streetsville, and part of Oakville.
Mississauga is a First Nations Peoples word for 'river in the north of many mouths.'
Between 1826 and 1847, a band of Mississaugas who had conv¬erted to Christianity formed a settlement on the Credit R. and with government assistance built log houses, a sawmill, school, and chapel.
By 1840, 500 acres (202.5 ha) were under cultivation and there were 50 houses.
The first aerodrome and flying school in Canada was established at Long Branch (now a part of Mississauga) in 1915, and for a time the first flying units of the Royal Flying Corps, Canada, were based here.
The muddy terrain proved unsuitable for a flying school, and after 1917 the facility provided only ground training for cadets.
The Hon. Thomas Laird Kennedy (1878-1959) represented the riding of Peel in the Ontario legislature for all but one term over a 40-year period.
He was nicknamed 'Old Man Ontario' and served as minister of agriculture in three administrations and as premier 1948-1949.
In 1979 a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed inside the city limits. More than 250,000 people were safely evacuated.
