- Pop. 2,126. In CochraneDist.,on the Moose R., 24km from its mouth at James Bay and 298 km by rail (and then by boat) N of Cochrane.
- The second Hudson's Bay Company fort was built by Charles Bayly on what was then called Hayes I. in 1672. It was captured by the French in 1686 and renamed Fort St. Louis.
- It was returned to the company in 1735 and has been in continual operation since. A stone forge inside the blacksmtth shop is one of the oldest 'structures' in Ontario.
- The original shop was built in the late 1600s, but was moved back from the riverbank in 1820. Because the forge had to be transported a long distance, it was dis-assembled and rebuilt, stone by stone, at the present location.
- In summer when the Ontario Northland Railway runs Polar Bear Express excursion trains from Cochrane six times a week, an apprentice smithy runs the forge and explains its operation to visitors.
- A plaque in front of the Hudson's Bay Staff House recalls the fate of Arctic explorer Henry Hudson. In 1610 Hudson navigated the treacherous Hudson Strait and explored the inland waters of Hudson Bay.
- After a bleak winter in James Bay the navigator was cast adrift in an open boat by his mutinous crew on the journey back to England.
