- Pop.4,192. In Arthur T., Wellington C., on the S Br. of the Saugeen R. and Hwys 6 & 89, 69 km. S of Owen Sound.
- Settlement of this community followed shortly after the original survey of the Garafraxa Rd. made by Charles Rankin between Fergus and Owen Sound.
- The survey was started in 1837, interrupted by the Mackenzie Rebellion and eventually completed in 1841.
- When the post office was established in 1851 it was named Maitland River, as the South Saugeen R. was then called. The place was also called Maitland Bush, Maitland Hills, and Maitland Woods.
- In 1853 the post office was renamed Mount Forest, likely by postmaster Frederick McDonald after Mountforest in County Wexford, Ireland.
