- Pop. 537. In Normanby T., Grey C., on the S fork of the Saugeen R. and C. Rds. 10 & 16,64 km S of Owen Sound. The first settler, in 1855, was David Winkler, a native of Germany.
- He laid out a village, which was soon peopled by German immigrants. The post office opened in 1856 as Newstead and the following year the name was changed to Neustadt, German for new town.
- In the early 1900s several fires destroyed a number of village businesses, and in 1908 a flood washed away many village streets and most of the wooden sidewalks.
- The village is the birthplace of John George Diefenbaker, 13th prime minister of Canada, 1957-1963.
