- Pop. 6,494. In Wilmot T., Reg. Mun. of Waterloo, on the Nith R. and Hwy 7 & 8, 19 km. SW of Kitchener.
- Settlement began in the early 1830s with a group of about 50 English and German immigrants. A grist mill built by Josiah Cushman formed the nucleus of the community then called Cassel.
- Many died in a cholera epidemic that swept the area in 1834. The post office was established in 1851 as New Hamburg after Hamburg in Germany.
- The town possesses a charter issued by Queen Victoria to the Wilmot Agricultural Society granting the privilege of setting up a market and carrying on business.
