- Pop. 370. In Laxton and Somerville Ts., Victoria C., on Gull R. near its mouth on the W shore of Shadow L. and Hwy 35 and C. Rd. 45, 46 km. N of Lindsay.
- By 1860 the community was known as McLaughlin's Mills after a sawmill and grist mill built by early settler Alexander A. McLaughlin on Gull R.
- When the post office was being named in 1862, Rev. Bayard Taylor, a guest at the time of Mr. McLaughlin, suggested the name Nordland after a village in Africa where he had been working.
- It was decided to omit the 'd' and make the name Norland, indicating the community was 'at the end of civilization' in Victoria C.
