Pop. 823. In Norwich T., Oxford C., on Big Otter Cr. and C. Rd. 19,29 km SE of Woodstock. John Earls and Paul Avery settled the site in 1807 and built grist and sawmills.
The community was frrst known as Otter Creek Mills. The post office was established in 1837, taking its name from the creek, along whose banks otter made their homes. The otter, a large member of the weasel family, is harvested in Canada for its pelt.
