Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 20,380. In Grey C., on Owen Sound off Georgian Bay at the mouths of the Sydenham and Pottawattomi Rs., and Hwys 6, 10, 21, & 26, 63 km W of Collingwood.
  • In 1616 Samuel de Champlain visited a First Nations Peoples encampment called Wadineednon, translated as 'beautiful valley.' By the early 1840s the site was the northern terminus of the Garafraxa Colonization Rd. and free land grants were offered
  • along its length, subject to settlement duties. John Telfer, government-appointed land agent for the new town, was one of the first settlers, in 1842.
  • The settlement was frrst known as Sydenham or Sydenham Bay after Charles Edward Poulett Thomson, Baron ofSydenham and governor-in-chief of British North America 1838-1841.
  • Sailors landing here called it Owen's Sound because the bay beside which it was located was named for Capt. William Fitzwilliam Owen who charted it in 1815.
  • The post office opened in 1846, as Owens Sound; in 1857 Owens lost its 's.' Owen Sound was the hometown of First World War flying ace William A very 'Billy' Bishop, credited with destroying 72 enemy aircraft and forming the Royal Can. A. F. after the war
  • His boyhood home is a museum. Another popular tourist attraction is Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery. Thomson was a local artist who inspired the formation of the Group of Seven Canadian painters.
