Description From Owner:
- Pop. 398. In Dover T., Kent C. on C. Rd. 34, 10 km W of Chatham. Pain Court was one of the fIrst French-speaking communities in southern Ontario, first known as Dover South.
- In the early 1800s when it was settled, the closest flour mill was Detroit, a week-long round trip by canoe. Settlers were often heard to lament they were short of bread and the community soon bore that name: 'Pain,' French for bread; 'Court,' for short.
