Ontario Tourism Region : Southwestern
Description From Owner:
- Pop. 1,654. In West Williams T., Middlesex C., on Parkhill Cr. and C. Rds. 7 & 8 I, 50 km. NW of London.
- Parkhill was established in 1860 after the Grand Trunk Railway came through the area. The settlement was first known as Westwood, the name of the railway station, (so called because the place was in the west and in a deep woods of maple, beech, and oak).
- There was already a post office in Ontario by that name so the name was changed to Swainby for the hometown in North Yorkshire, England, of postmaster James Plews.
- In 1864 the name was changed again to Park Hill, this time for Park Hill House, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the hometown of prominent resident Simon McLeod.
- The community was plagued by fires and in one of them in 1882, the town's early records were lost. In 1959 the name was changed to Parkhill.
