Description From Owner:
- Pop. 644. Part of Essex C., 13 km. SW of Point Pelee in L. Erie. Except for tiny Middle I., Pelee I. is the southernmost point of Canada.
- The island was leased from the First Nations Peoples in 1788 by Thomas McKee and purchased in 1823 by William McCormick for $500.
- In the winter of 1838 a combined force of infantry, militia, and First Nations Peoples crossed the Ice and routed some 300 American supporters of Mackenzie's Rebellion from Pelee I.
- In 1865 three Kentuckians discovered the island's moderate climate was conducive to growing grapes. They founded a winery named Vin Villa which flourished until prohibition.
- In 1979 the Pelee Island Winery started business. Its grapes are processed on the mainland. The island's name is derived from the French word 'pelee, 'meaning 'bare,' or 'bald.'
- Each autumn 700 huters arrive to fill 18,000 pheasants with buckshot. The island municipality has raised pheasants since 1932 and profits from the hunts help to reduce taxes.
