Description From Owner:
- Pop. 13,492. City in Renfrew C., on the Ottawa R. at the mouths of the Indian and Muskrat Rs. opposite Allumette I., QC, and Hwy 148 and C. Rds. 51 & 58, 4 km NE of Hwy 17, 68 km. NW of Arnprior.
- Peter White founded the settlement, arriving in 1828 after service with Nelson in the Baltic and Sir James Yeo's squadron on L. Ontario during the War of 1812.
- The community developed in two sections -- Lower Town, which became Campbelltown and then Moffatt, and Upper Town, which became Miramichi and then Sydenham.
- In 1839 the communities joined and became Pembroke after the Hon. Sidney Herbert, a son of the Earl of Pembroke and secretary of the British Admiralty. In 1884 Pembroke became the first Canadian community to pioneer commercial electric lighting.
