Pop. 13,492. City in Renfrew C., on the Ottawa R. at the mouths of the Indian and Muskrat Rs. opposite Allumette I., QC, and Hwy 148 and C. Rds. 51 & 58, 4 km NE of Hwy 17, 68 km. NW of Arnprior.
Peter White founded the settlement, arriving in 1828 after service with Nelson in the Baltic and Sir James Yeo's squadron on L. Ontario during the War of 1812.
The community developed in two sections -- Lower Town, which became Campbelltown and then Moffatt, and Upper Town, which became Miramichi and then Sydenham.
In 1839 the communities joined and became Pembroke after the Hon. Sidney Herbert, a son of the Earl of Pembroke and secretary of the British Admiralty. In 1884 Pembroke became the first Canadian community to pioneer commercial electric lighting.
