- Pop. 7,858. Part of the City of Timmins in Cochrane Dist. at the N end of Porcupine L., on Hwys 101 & 655,13 km. E of Timmins.
- The river, lake, district, and community are named after an island shaped like a porcupine in a nearby river. The first gold claim was staked in 1905 about 16 km. S of where Hwy 101 crosses the Frederick House R.
- The first gold mine went into production in 1907 on Gold I. in Nighthawk L. In the 50 years following Benny Hollinger's discovery of gold quartz in the Porcupine area, more than 45,000 claims were staked.
- Porcupine is often called 'The Golden City.'
