Description From Owner:
- Pop. 882. In Bayham T. Elgin C., on L. Erie at the mouth of Otter Cr. and C. Rds. 19 & 42, 25 km. S of Tillsonburg.
- Joseph DeFields and James Gibbons are believed to have been the first settlers, each building log cabins here in 1812.
- There was little growth until deputy-surveyor Col. Mahlon Burwell Col. and Thomas Talbot surveyed the townsite in 1830, and Burwell offered free land to settlers willing to build here.
- Burwell, a native of New Jersey, also gave land for construction of Trinity Anglican Church. It was built in 1836 and is a fine example of early Gothic Revival architecture. The settlement was named after Mahlon Burwell in 1830.
