Pop. 19,030. Part of the City of Cambridge, Reg. Mun. of Waterloo on the Speed R. near its confluence with the Grand R., and Hwys 8 & 401, 10 km. SE of Kitchener.
Preston was once called Cambridge after the Duke of Cambridge, son of George III, and has passed that name on to the city of which it is now a part.
Preston's fIrst settler was John Erb, a Swiss-German Mennonite from Pennsylvania and a brother of Abraham Erb, founder of Waterloo.
John Erb built a mill and the place became known as Erb's Mills. The name was later changed to Cambridge Mills, and in 1830, at the suggestion of Squire William Scollick, an early settler, it was named Preston after his hometown in Lancashire, England.
That year warm mineral springs were discovered, and Preston enjoyed a brief international reputation as a health spa.
The North American Hotel, later the Kress Hotel, is said to have been Ontario's first hotel to provide a bath with running water.
The City of Cambridge was formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of the city of Galt in North Dumfries T. and the towns of Hespeler and Preston in Waterloo T.
