Description From Owner:
- Pop. 927. In Atwood T., Rainy River Dist., on Rainy R. and Hwys 11 & 600, at the N end of a bridge across the Rainy R. from Baudette, MN , 88. km W of Fort Frances .
- The place was settled by trappers and called Beaver Mills. By the 1870s, lumering had become the main industry in the area. The post office opened as Rainy River in 1886.
- The post office opened as Rainy River in 1886. The 'rain' connection comes from a 1793 map which shows Lac de la Plui (Lake of the Rain). Rainy River was incorporated as a town in 1904 and destroyed by fire the following year.
- The town was immediately rebuilt.
