Pop. 3,177. In the Reg. Mun. of Ottawa-Carleton, on the Jock R (a tributary of the Rideau R) and C. Rds. 5 & 10, 32 km. SW of Ottawa.
Richmond was one of four settlements of military veterans intended to form a chain of potential defence across eastern Upper Canada.
The other communities were Perth, Lanark, and March. Richmond Military Settlement was settled around 1818 and named after Charles Lennox, fourth Duke of Richmond, governor-in-ehief of Canada 1818-19.
He was a career soldier and fought at least two duels, one with the Duke of York.
Lennox was in Canada only a short time before he was bitten by a pet fox at William Henry, (now Sorel QC), and died near Richmond of hydrophobia (rabies).
