Description From Owner:
- Immediately S of Hwy 17, on Hwy 548, 40 km. SE of Sault Ste. Marie. This 24-by 30-km. island is in the mouth of the St. Mary's River, connected to the mainland by causeway and bridge.
- In fur-trading days a British fort at the SE tip of the island guarded the trade route from Montreal to the upper Great Lakes.
- British forces established a base camp in 1796 and two years later started to build Fort St. Joseph, the most westerly outpost in British NorthAmerica.
- By 1803 the blockhouse, guardhouse, stockade and powder magazinl were complete and Montreal fur traders moved to the island, building huts, stores and wharves near the fort.
