- 500. In Nichol T., Wellington C., on the Irvine R. and C. Rds. 7 & 18,25 km. NW of Guelph.
- The first settler was Sem Wissler, whose ancestors had immigrated to Pennsylvania from Switzerland about 1730. Wissler settled here in 1845 and called the place Salem, and sometimes 'City of Peace.'
- When the post office was established in 1863, the place was called Wynford. Wissler was the fIrst postmaster.
- By 1867 the name of the post office had been changed by Scots and United Empire Loyalists to Salem, after the Salem in Cumberland C., Nova Scotia.
