Schumacher, Ontario, Canada is my hometown and I still live here. I also went to Schumacher Public School and Schumacher High School in the 1940s and 1950s. I went to school with the author of an excellent biography of F. W. Schumacher and history of our town. 'Frederick W. Schumacher, Portrait of a Renaissance Man' by Louise Nightingale Smith. This biography was followed by, 'Schumacher, Voices in the Goldfields', a collection of memories of local residents.

I went to Schumacher Public School from 1935 to 1941 and remember what a progressive school it was. We moved to Southern Ontario in 1941 and I found that I was a grade ahead of my contemp-oraries in the south. I have fond memories of Schumacher and recall the Christmases and the gifts that Mr. Schumacher provided from I believe Eaton's catalogue although we didn't know it at the time. We had top notch teachers and that school. Mr. boyce who was the principal at that time saw to it that anyone who arrived from outside Canada was always called a 'new Canadian' and NEVER a foreigner. Patriotism was first and foremost and during the war we learned every patriotic song that was ever composed I am sure. We marched in and out of school while the music teacher played a lively march. The school offered a wonderful music program - half an hour each day. I am so grateful that I was able to go to such a remarkable school which was rare in such a tiny town.
