Description From Owner:
- Pop. 690. In South Easthope T., Perth C., on Hwy 7 & 8, & 59 and C. Rd. 107, 12 km. E of Stratford. The place was founded in 1832 by David Bell and fIrst known as Bell's Corners.
- When the post office opened in 1849, it was called Bell's Corners-Wilmot, Wilmot being a settlement 14 km. distant.
- In 1852, hotel owner Alexander Mitchell, who was also postmaster, proposed naming the settlement after his favourite poet-playwright, and his suggestion was adopted.
