- Pop. 280. In Sombra T., Lambton C., on the St. Clair.R. and St. Clair Parkway and C. Rd. 2, linked to Marine City, MI, by ferry service, 32 km S of Sarnia.
- Abraham Smith and Samuel H. Burnham, who arrived in 1821, were the first settlers. The place was fIrst called Shawanese. but was later named Sombra by Lt.-Gov. Sir Peregrine Maitland in 1822.
- Maitland had served in Spain’s Peninsular War, liked the Spanish language and tossed its words around Ontario as place names. Sombra is Spanish for 'shade,' and referred to the area's shady forests.
