Description From Owner:
- Pop. 864. In Sheddon T., Algoma Dist., on Hwy 17, 105 km SW of Sudbury.
- The post office was established in 1887 as Spanish River Station, with the community taking its name from the nearby Spanish River, so named by Admiralty surveyor Henry W. Bayfield, because Spanish Indians had at one time lived in the area.
- Another version of the origin of the name is that a Spaniard fled the hand of justice in the lower Mississippi area in the old fur-trade days, and ended up among the uninquisitive coureurs de bois, and so gave a name to the place.
