Pop. 301. In Yarmouth T., Elgin C., on C. Rds. 27 & 36, 19 km. SE of St. Thomas. The community was first known as the Quaker Settlement or Yarmouth Corners.
When the post office opened in 1841, the place was named Sparta by John McDowell and Henry Yarwood after a place in the Kittatiny Mountains of New Jersey.
Johnathan Doan, a Quaker from Pennsylvania, was the frrst settler on 200 acres (81 ha) ofland in 1815. When he became agent for 3,000 more acres (1,215 ha) he returned to Pennsylvania to convince other Quakers to move north and settle.
To encourage settlement, Doan built a saw- and grist mill and a tannery. In 1831 Alvin Jay erected a blacksmith shop for the horses of troops involved in the 1837 Rebellion.
Joshua Doan was sentenced to hang for his part in the Reform movement; his body was returned here for burial in the Quaker cemetery. One of Sparta's historic sites is the 1821 Friends' Meeting House.
