Description From Owner:
- Pop. 12,884. In Markham and Whitchurch Ts., Reg. Mun. of York, on Duffin’s Cr. and C. Rds. 14 & 30, 45 km NE of Toronto.
- The original owner of the land was Abraham Stouffer who came from Pennsylvania, settled in 1806 and after whom the community was named when the post office was established in 1832.
- Among early settlers in the area were a number of Quakers who, until 1816, when they established their own organization, had formed part of the Yonge Street Meeting.
- The Whitchurch Quaker group later split into several factions, but by 1900 it had come together to form Pine Orchard Union Church, which stands today on Vivian Rd. in Stouffville.
