Description From Owner:
- Pop. 907. In Bayham T., Elgin C., on C. Rds. 19 & 38,15 km SW of Tillsonburg. Originally known as Sandy town, the name was changed to Straffordville when the post office was established in 1851.
- Local miller Robert James McNaughton had wanted the place to be named McNaughtonville after him, but other residents objected to his conceit.
- McNaughton then proposed Straffordville after Sir John Byng, Earl of Strafford. Byng had served in Spain's Peninsular War 1811-1814 and was commander-in-chief of Ireland 1828-1831.
