Pop. 907. In Bayham T., Elgin C., on C. Rds. 19 & 38,15 km SW of Tillsonburg. Originally known as Sandy town, the name was changed to Straffordville when the post office was established in 1851.
Local miller Robert James McNaughton had wanted the place to be named McNaughtonville after him, but other residents objected to his conceit.
McNaughton then proposed Straffordville after Sir John Byng, Earl of Strafford. Byng had served in Spain's Peninsular War 1811-1814 and was commander-in-chief of Ireland 1828-1831.

How exciting! I have always wondered how my home town was named, and I have finally found out from the information on this web site. There is a man by the name of Strafford here in Calgary, and, he,too, was interested in the origin of the name of our town. Now I can find out if there is any connection. Thanks a bunch.
