- Pop. 6,161. In Springer T., Nipissing Dist., on the Sturgeon R., 5 km upstream from L. Nipissing, on Hwys 17 & 64.
- A Hudson's Bay Company post had been established at the mouth of the Sturgeon R. before 1880, but the present townsite was not settled until 1883, when the CPR line came through the region.
- The townsite then was called Barrier Falls. With the railway came many French-Canadian settlers and much of to day's population has French as its mother tongue.
- For years Sturgeon Falls was known for its excellent caviar, taken from the sturgeon of L. Nipissing. Overfishing killed the industry.
