- Pop. 1,335. In Thessalon T., Algoma Dist., on the North Ch. of L. Huron at the mouth of the Thessalon R. (which drains Ottertail, Desert, and Rock lakes)andHwys 17 & 129, 86 km. SE of Sault Ste. Marie.
- The place was originally a First Nations Peoples encampment called Neyashewun, meaning 'a point of land.'
- That name was corrupted through translation into French by the explorer Rene Francois de Brehan Galinee who marked it on his map of 1670 as Tessalon.
- In 1755, cartographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin charted it as Pointe aux Thessalons and Alexander Henry, recounting his travels, called the place O'Tossalon.
- In 1814 two armed American schooners, the Tigress and Scorpion, were captured by a British contingent from Fort Michilimackinac, in the waters between Drummond and St. Joseph I.
- When N. Dyment of Barrie built a sawmill here in 1877, he called the place Thessalon Mills.
- A large amount of square-cut timber from that mill was shipped by sailing vessels to Kincardine and Goderich. The lumber ships returned with supplies for the entire north shore of L. Huron.
