Description From Owner:
- Pop. 1,001. In Essa and Innisfil Ts., Simcoe C., onC. Rds. 21 & 27, 17 km. S of Barrie.
- Thornton developed during the 1820s and was first known as Henrysville or Henry's Corners after early settler John Henry, who was the first teacher and then the schoolmaster, and who also became the postmaster when an office opened in 1854.
- The name Henrysville caused confusion in the mails, so the post office requested a name change, and the community became Thornton after Henry Thornton who owned a grist mill, sawmill, and planing mill.
